❶〔偉そうにする〕
彼は劣等感から威張るのだ
His inferiority complex makes him 「act big [put on airs].
あの男の威張った態度は鼻持ちならない
I cannot stand [bear] his domineering attitude.
彼らはなんと威張って歩いていることだろう
Look how they strut and swagger about!
彼は部下に威張り散らす
He throws his weight about among his subordinates.／He lords it over his men.
❷〔自慢する〕 ⇒じまん（自慢）
彼は息子が成功したと威張っている
He boasts [brags] about his son's success.
彼女はいくつもの賞を得たが少しも威張ったところがない
She has won several prizes, but she is not at all puffed up (with pride).
