For the first time since the Penal Code was established in 1907, the revised Penal Code, which was overhauled to toughen penalties for sex offenses, came into force on July 13, 2017.
1907年(明治40年)の刑法制定以来初めて、性犯罪の厳罰化のため大幅に見直された改正刑法が、2017年7月13日に施行された。

It has been pointed out that under the current Penal Code, the penalty for rape is lighter than the penalty for depriving people of their possessions.
