❶〔音を立てないように〕softly; quietly

病人を起こさないようにそっと歩いた
He walked softly [quietly] so as not to awaken the sick man.

❷〔壊れないように〕gently

壊れないようにそっと降ろしてください
Put it down gently so that it doesn't break.

❸〔こっそり〕stealthily

そっと父の机の引き出しを開けた
He stealthily opened the drawer in his father's desk.

彼はそっと私の部屋に入ってきた
He stole [slipped] into my room.

彼らはそっと事を運んだ
They did it covertly [stealthily/《口》 on the sly].

❹〔触れないでおく〕

彼女をそっとしておいてやりましょう
Let's leave her alone.

この問題はそっとしておくことにした
We have decided 「to let the matter rest [not to do anything about the problem].

藪蛇(やぶへび)にならないようにそっとしておきなさい
Let sleeping dogs lie.
