pick at the food with chopsticks

He nudged [jogged] me with his elbow to attract my attention.

鳥が柿の実をつついている
The bird is pecking at the persimmon.

すき焼きはなべをみんなでつついて食べる
When we eat sukiyaki we all pick food from the same pan.
