わかれる【分かれる】

❶〔分岐する〕branch off ((from))；〔またになる〕fork ((into))

公道から分かれた狭い道
a narrow road branching off from the highway

道はそこで二またに分かれている
The road forks (off in two directions) there.

中央高速は大月で甲府方面と河口湖方面に分かれる
At Otsuki the Chuo Expressway forks into the road for Kofu and the one for Lake Kawaguchi.

❷〔別々になる〕separate；〔分裂する〕(be) split ((into))

警官は二手に分かれて犯人を追った
The policemen separated into two groups to track down the criminal.

３台の車に分かれて乗った
We split up and rode in three cars.

党が二つに分かれた
The party split into two factions.

この一派は主流から分かれたものだ
This is a group that branched [broke] off from the main school.

評価が分かれた
We were divided in our evaluation of it.

❸〔区分される〕be divided ((into))

この本は10章に分かれている
This book is divided into ten chapters.

商品は色別に分かれている
The goods are arranged by [according to] color.

本は分野別に分かれている
The books are classified by field.

その社会はいくつかの階層に分かれていた
The society was separated into several classes.

❹〔解散する〕disperse

デモ隊は目的地で分かれた
The demonstrators dispersed at their destination.／The demonstration broke up at its destination.
