Hatsumode is a person's first visit of the new year to a shrine or temple, and is made during the first week of January. People toss money into offertory chests and pray for the health of family members and prosperity in business. After offering their prayers, many draw lots to learn their fortune, and buy talismans or amulets.（意訳：年が明けてから初めて神社や寺にお参りに行くこと．お賽銭(さいせん)を投げ入れ，家族の無病息災や商売繁盛を祈願する．参拝後，おみくじを引いて運勢を占ったり，お札(ふだ)やお守りを受ける人が多い）
