❶〔存在する〕be, exist；〔生きる〕live

かごの中にりんごがある
There are some apples in the basket.

君は神が本当にあると思うか
Do you think God really exists?

これは今ある船でいちばん大きいものです
This is the largest ship in the world.

この世にある限り君を忘れない
As long as I live I will never forget you.／I will remember you for the rest of my life.

❷〔位置・地位を占める〕be situated，《米》 be located; stand

学校は東京の郊外にある
Our school is [is situated/is located] in the suburbs of Tokyo.

記念塔は公園にある
The monument stands in the park.

川の向こうに牧場があった
There was a pasture on the other side of the river.

この村には城址がある
This village contains the ruins of a castle.

彼は政府の要職にあった
He held 「high office [a high post] in the government.
