Bonenkai (literally, “forgetting-the- old-year gatherings") are parties held among groups of co-workers or friends at the end of the year. On these occasions people mingle together freely without formality, regardless of their rank at work. Over drinks, they eat and chat and enjoy themselves, and thus forget the year's hardships and unpleasant experiences.（意訳：職場，友人などの仲間と年末に催す宴会のこと．その年にあったいやなことや苦労などを忘れるために，無礼講などといって，その日だけは上下の別なく酒を酌み交わす）
