❶〔停止する〕stop
列車が駅に止まった
The train 「pulled up [stopped] at the station.
車が急に止まった
The car came to a sudden stop.
車のエンジンが止まった
The engine (of the car) stalled [went dead].
❷〔やむ，終わる〕
騒音がぱったりと止まった
The noise stopped suddenly.
歯の痛みは止まりましたか
Is your toothache gone?
彼女は涙が止まらなかった
She 「went on [kept] crying.／Her tears never stopped.
笑いが止まらなかった
I could not stop laughing.
厳寒で暖房器具屋は笑いが止まらない
The severe cold has the heating apparatus dealers chuckling with glee.
❸〔中絶する〕
台風のため電気も水道も止まった
Because of the typhoon both the electric current and the water supply failed [were cut off].
