けす【消す】
❶〔火を〕put out；《文》 extinguish
水をかけて火を消す
put out a fire with water
ろうそくを吹き消す
blow out a candle
彼はたばこを足で踏み消した
He stamped out the cigarette with his foot.
燃えている芝をたたき消した
We beat out the grass fire.
❷〔電灯・ガスなどを〕turn off; switch off
明かりを消す
「turn off [switch off] a light
ラジオ［ガス］を消す
turn off the radio [gas]
❸〔字などをぬぐって消す〕rub out [off], erase；〔線などで消す〕cross out
黒板の字を消す
erase the words on the blackboard
壁の落書きを消す
「rub out [clean off] the scribblings on the wall
波が砂の上の足跡を消した
The waves 「washed away [《文》 obliterated] the footprints in the sand.
