たえる【耐える・堪える】

❶〔我慢する〕endure; bear; stand

彼は苦しい生活に耐えた
He endured a hard life.

もうこれ以上この苦痛には耐えられない
I can't bear this pain any longer.

この騒音には耐えられない
I can't stand this noise.

彼は冬の早朝練習に耐えた
He managed to survive the early morning winter training.

❷〔もちこたえる〕stand up to; withstand

建物は震度６の地震に耐えられなかった
The building was unable to withstand an earthquake of six on the Japanese (seismic) scale.

この皿は高熱に耐える
This dish can stand intense heat.／This is a heat-resistant dish.

この金属は酸には耐えられない
This metal cannot resist acid.

❸〔応じられる，…に値する〕

彼ならこの任に堪えられる
He has 「the ability [what it takes] to fill this position.

この花は観賞に堪えない
This flower is not worth looking at.

彼女に聞くに堪えない罵詈雑言(ばりぞうごん)を浴びせた
He subjected her to unspeakably [unbearably] abusive language.

堪えない

〔「…に堪えない」の形で，大いに…だ〕

氏の当会へのご援助はまことに感謝に堪えません
We cannot be too grateful to him for the help he has given our society.

彼の私に対する態度は憤慨に堪えない
I'm absolutely furious about the way he treats me.
