[助]（◆否定形は must not，((略式))mustn't）

1 ((義務))…しなければならない…する義務がある，ぜひとも…したい［する必要がある］．

Children must obey their elders.
子どもは年長者に従わなければならない

“Must you go now?” “Yes, I must.”
「もう行かなければならないのですか」「ええ，そうなんです」（◆否定の答えは“No，I don't have to.”）

[語法]

(1) この意味の must の否定（…しなくてよい）には must not ではなく don't have [need] to, ((主に英略式))haven't got to, ((英))needn't を用いる．

(2) 過去［未来，完了］形には have to の変化形（had to, will [shall] have to, have had to など）を用いる

Will I have to show my passport there?
そこでパスポートを見せなければならないのですか．

(3) must が話者の主観や信念を含むのに対し，have to は周囲の事情からそうせざるを得ないというニュアンスを伝える．((略式))では must より好まれる．

(4) I must say [confess, admit] ... は話の要点を強調するために会話でよく用いられる．

(5) must も have to も未来を表す副詞（句）と共に用いることが可能

I must go there next month.
来月にはそこに行かなければならない．

1a ((禁止))〔must not〕…してはいけない．

We mustn't worry about this too much.
このことについて心配しすぎてはいけない

“May I take this book?” “No, you mustn't.”
「この本を持っていってもいいですか」「だめだ」（◆must not（禁止），may not（不許可），cannot（不許可）のうち，((略式))ではcannotがふつう）

1b ((勧誘・要望))((特に英略式))〔you must〕ぜひ…しなさい；〔we must〕ぜひ…しましょう．

You must come and have tea with us.
ぜひうちへお茶にいらっしゃい

1c ((強い意向・固執))((略式))どうしても…する，…せずにはいられない，…しないと承知しない（◆must に強勢）．

This book must be available for all interested in nutrition.
この本は栄養学に興味のある人は皆手に入れてほしい

I must confess I was deeply depressed.
正直言って本当に落ち込んでいたんだ

I must say, you are looking extremely well.

2 ((推測))きっと…に違いないきっと…のはずだ；〔must have done〕きっと…だったに違いない（◆「…のはずがない」は can't を用いるが，((主に米))では must not（通例短縮しない）を「…でないに違いない」の意にも用いる）．

彼は正気のはずがない

You must be tired.
お疲れでしょう

This must be a joke.
冗談でしょう

There must be something wrong.

（だったら）これは冗談でないってことだな（◆((米))notはmustではなくbe a jokeを否定する）

2a ((必然))必ず…する．

Bad seed must produce bad corn.
悪い種子からは必ず悪い実ができる

[語法]

(1) She must be kind. は通例「彼女は親切に違いない」の意だが，「彼女は親切にしなければならない」の意にもなる．

(2) 完了不定詞（have＋過去分詞），進行形（be＋-ing）の前の must は通例「…に違いない」の意だが，文脈により完了不定詞の前の must が義務を表す場合もある

You must have finished your report by next March.
君は来年の３月までにレポートを仕上げなければならない．

3 ((過去))((略式))（過去の出来事について）あいにく…した．

Just as she was starting to like me, I must offend her!
彼女が私を好きになりかけていたときに，怒らせてしまったなんて

[語法]

must は次の場合にも過去形として用いる．

(1) 主節の動詞が過去形である従節中で

She said she must find a job by summer.
彼女は夏までにぜひ仕事を見つけなければならないと言った．

(2) 回想的叙述や描出話法の独立節中で

She was unfit for the work; she must always be stopping to rest.
彼女はその仕事には不向きだった．絶えず仕事を中断して体を休めなければならなかったから．
