In the tax system reform in fiscal 1997, the administration of then Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto hiked the consumption tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent and abolished special income tax cuts.
1997年度の税制改正で、当時の橋本内閣は消費税率を3%から5%に引き上げ、所得税の特別減税を廃止した。
