[語法]

than の次に人称代名詞がくるときは，He is taller than me. のようにしばしば主格の代わりに目的格を用いる．一方，主節に他動詞を用いると than の次の代名詞が主格か目的格かで通例意味が異なる

He loves you better than me.
彼は私より君を愛している

He loves you better than I.
彼のほうが私より君を愛している．

2 ((関係詞的))…より（も）．

3 〔different(ly)，else，other(wise)などの後で〕（種類・場所・様態などが）…よりほかの，…のほかには，…と違った．

They behaved differently at school than (they did) at home.

3a 〔(would) prefer，preferable，rather，soonerなどの後で〕…するよりむしろ，…するくらいなら（いっそ）…したい．

I'd rather [sooner] die than spend my days in a place like this.
こんな所で暮らすなら死んだほうがましだ

3b 〔no sooner [scarcely, hardly, barely] A than B〕Ａするかしないうちに［するとすぐに］Ｂ（◆scarcely [hardly, barely] A than B は scarcely [hardly, barely] A when B との混交）．

I had no sooner spoken than the telephone rang.
話し始めたとたんに電話が鳴った
