❶〔頂上〕the top, the summit；〔上部〕the upper [top] part

❷〔「…の上に［を］」の形で，…の上方に［を］〕above（▼高い位置に）；over（▼真上をおおって，越えて）

A lamp was hanging over the table.
彼の投げたボールは私の頭の上を越えていった
The ball he threw flew over my head.
❸〔「…の上に」の形で，…の表面に〕on, upon（▼接して）；over（▼一面におおって）

「There is ice [Ice has formed] on the pond.

A kite fell on the roof.

❹〔先に述べたこと〕

I am opposed to it for the above reasons.

❺〔年長〕
彼は私の一つ上である
He is a year older than I am.／He is my senior by one year.
上の子はもう大学を出た
My older [oldest] child has graduated from college.（▼oldestは下に二人以上いるとき）
❻〔段階・地位の高い方〕
彼は学校では私より下だったが，会社では上になった
He didn't do as well as I did at school, but in the firm he has a higher position than mine.
彼は上のクラスに編入された
He was transferred to the upper class.
上を見ればきりがない
If you start comparing yourself with people who are better off, there'll be no end to it.
３年生より上の子供たち

After drinking beer, he drank whisky as well.

The old man has poor hearing as well as poor eyesight.

He became ill, and 「what was worse [then on top of that], he lost his job.／《口》 He became ill and then he lost his job to boot.（▼to bootは文の終わりに用い，通常望ましくない事柄について言う）
心が優しい上に顔も美しい
She's kindhearted and, furthermore [what's more], she's beautiful.
⓫〔「…した上は」の形で，…したからには〕
見つかった上は仕方がない
Since [Now that] it has been discovered, we can do nothing about it.
上に立つ
