あらそう【争う】

❶〔競争する〕compete, contend ((with [against] a person for a thing))

彼はほかの３人の男と賞を争った
He competed with three other men for the prize.

日本は自動車産業で他国と争っている
Japan is competing against [with] other countries in automobile production.

彼らは議会の１議席を争った
They contended for a seat in the Diet.

彼らは主導権を争った
They struggled [vied with each other] for supremacy.

スタジアムに入ろうと先を争って走った
They raced to be the first to enter the stadium.

❷〔けんかする〕fight；〔論争する〕dispute, argue, have 「a dispute [an argument]；〔口論する〕quarrel, wrangle, exchange (angry) words

隣室から争う声が聞こえた
I heard the voices of people quarreling in the next room.

裏庭で２人の男が争っているのが見えた
Two men were seen fighting in the backyard.

科学者はその問題について争っていた
The scientists were disputing [arguing/engaged in a controversy over] the subject.

❸〔主張する〕

最高裁まで争うつもりだ
I won't drop the suit, even if I have to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.
