Hatsuyume, or the first dream of the year, is defined as the dream a person has on January 1 or 2. In the old days, it was believed that dreams were divine revelations, and people were eager to have good dreams at the beginning of the year. Dreams said to bring good luck are ones about Mt. Fuji, hawks, and eggplants, in decreasing order of value. It is said that sleeping with the image of a treasure ship under one's pillow on the night of January 2 will bring a good dream.（意訳：正月の１日または２日に見る夢．昔の人にとって夢は神仏のお告げであると信じられていたので，年頭によい夢を見ることは一大関心事であった．初夢に見ると縁起がよいとされるのは「一富士二鷹三茄子(なすび)」である．また，２日の夜，宝船の絵を枕の下に敷いて寝るとよい夢が見られるという）
