❶〔留めてあるもの・掛けてあるものが離れる〕

取っ手が外れた
The handle has come off.

ボタンが一つ外れているよ
One of your buttons is undone.

ホックが外れた
The hook came undone.

引き戸が外れた
The sliding door has come 「out of [off] its groove.

門扉のかんぬきが外れていた
The gate was unbolted.

❷〔外へそれる〕

市街を外れると麦畑が広がっていた
Once we left the (center of the) city, we came upon an expanse of wheat fields.

その質問はピントが外れている
The question is beside the point.

彼女の歌は調子が外れている
She sings 「off key [out of tune].

❸〔当たらない〕

矢が的を外れた
The arrow missed the mark.

くじに外れた
I drew a blank.

天気予報が外れた
The weather forecast proved wrong.

❹〔反する〕be against

That is against the rules.

His behavior is a violation [breach] of etiquette.
