❶〔普段，平素〕

彼女は朝鉢植に水をやるのが常である
She waters the potted plants every morning.

休日には彼を訪ねるのが常だった
I used to visit him on holidays.

彼は常の様子と違っていた
He did not look himself [his usual self].

❷〔そうありがちなこと〕

青年の常として彼は自信過剰である
He is too sure of himself, as is 「often the case [the tendency] with young men.

平和な時代の常として人々は安逸をむさぼっている
As is usually the case in times of peace, the people have become indolent.

❸〔普通，平凡〕

彼は常の人ではない
He is no ordinary person.

世の常の能力を備えている
He has average ability.

❹〔不変，安定〕

彼は生活が変転常なしだ
He is constantly changing his mode of life.
