a lawyer，《米》 an attorney (at law)；〔法律顧問〕counsel；〔法廷弁護士〕 《英》 a barrister；〔事務弁護士〕 《英》 a solicitor；〔総称〕the bar [Bar]（▼米国では法廷弁護士と事務弁護士の区別はない．米国で法廷に立つことを専門としている弁護士をa trial attorneyと呼ぶこともあるが，この名称は資格を表すものではない）
