❶〔目的，目標〕an aim; an object

当てもなく町をさまよった
He walked around the town aimlessly.

当てもなくアメリカへ行った
He went to the United States without any definite object.

どこか就職する当てはあるのか
Is there any prospect [possibility/likelihood] of your finding a job somewhere?

❷〔期待〕

当てにする
expect a person to do／count on

彼の助けを当てにしていたが外れた
I had 「counted on his help [expected him to help me], but was disappointed.

あまり息子を当てにするな
Don't expect too much of your son.

❸〔信用〕

当てにならない
unreliable／untrustworthy

彼は当てになるニュース源だ
He is a reliable news source.

ここの天気は当てにならない
You never know about the weather here.
