おとしだま【▲御年玉】
a New Year's gift [present]
説明
Otoshidama is a New Year's gift, often of money, given by elders, including superiors, to the young or to subordinates. It is the custom for parents, grandparents, and other relatives to hand out otoshidama money to children in small, decorated envelopes during the New Year's holidays. For this reason, New Year's family gatherings are one of the most highly anticipated events of the year for Japanese children.(意訳:新年の祝いに子供など目下のものに贈るお金やプレゼントのこと.親や祖父母,親戚などからお年玉がもらえるので,子供たちはお正月をとても楽しみにしている)
