いましめる【戒める】

❶〔訓戒する〕 《文》 admonish；〔警告する〕warn ((a person (not) to do))；〔叱責する〕scold

スピードを出し過ぎないように戒めた
I warned him 「not to drive too fast [against speeding].

教師は生徒の不注意を戒めた
The teacher scolded [《文》 admonished] the boys for being so careless.

市長は市の役人の手抜きを戒めた
The mayor reproved the city officials for their corner-cutting.

彼は近所の子供らのいたずらをきつく戒めた
He gave the neighborhood children a good scolding for their mischief.

❷〔禁ずる〕ban; prohibit

時の政府は奢侈(しゃし)を戒めた
The government of that time banned [put a ban on] all luxuries.
