ことわる【断る】

❶〔丁重に辞退する〕decline；〔拒絶する〕refuse ((to do))；〔はねつける〕reject, turn ((a thing, a person)) down

彼は就職を丁重に断った
He declined the offer of a job very politely.

にべもなく断る
flatly refuse

そんなばかげた提案は断る
「I refuse to [I can't] accept such an absurd proposal.

僕は彼女だと何も断れないんだ
I can't refuse her anything.／I can never say no to her.

３か所応募していたが全部断られた
I applied to three places, but was rejected by them all.

どうか断らないでください
Please don't turn me down.

セールスマンが来てもみんな断って頂戴

❸〔わびる〕offer apologies；〔釈明する〕make an excuse
