❶〔絶えること〕extinction

断絶する become extinct; cease to exist

その家は悲惨な事件のため断絶した
The family was wiped out in a tragic accident.

❷〔関係を絶つこと〕断絶する break [cut] off

世代の断絶
a generation gap

断絶の時代
the age of discontinuity

隣国と国交を断絶する
break off diplomatic relations with a neighboring country

Friendly relations were severed [ruptured].

断絶感

息子との断絶感に彼は苦しんだ
