ほしい【欲しい】
❶〔手に入れたい〕want; hope ((for))；wish ((for))；long ((for))；have a desire ((for)) （▼wantは望むことを単刀直入に表す語．hopeは期待が含まれる場合，wishは実現の可能性が薄い場合に使う．long forは切望すること）
私のちょうど欲しい物をくださって有り難う
It's just what I wanted! Thank you.
酒が一杯欲しいな
「I want [I'd like to have] a drink.
お茶が欲しいですか
Would you care for a cup of tea?
折り返し返事が欲しいと思っていたのだ
I had hoped for an answer by return mail.

❷〔「…してほしい」の形で，…してもらいたい〕

I want [would like] you to take me with you.（▼would likeのほうがていねいな表現）
そんなにひどく泣かないで欲しい
Don't cry so much.
うそはつかないで欲しいんだがね
I do wish you wouldn't lie.
人からして欲しいと思うことは人にもしてあげなければならない
You must do to others as [what] you wish others to do to you.
彼らの将来が幸福であって欲しいものだ
I wish them a happy future.／I hope their future will be a happy one.
それならそうと初めからはっきり言って欲しかった
If that's the case, I wish you had said so clearly at the beginning.
