❶〔無分別，むやみやたらなこと〕

あの人にはめったなことは言えない
You've got to watch [be careful (of)] what you say to him.

めったなまねをするんじゃない
Don't act rashly.／Don't go and do something silly.

❷〔「めったにない」の形で，ほとんどない〕

めったにないチャンスだ
It is a rare chance.／〔一生一度の〕It is the chance of a lifetime.

そんなことはめったにない
《口》 That happens only once in a blue moon.

❸〔「めったに…ない」の形で〕

日曜日はめったに家にいない
He is seldom at home on Sunday.

めったに彼に会わない
I don't see him very often.

めったにだまされはしない
〔簡単に〕I am not easily fooled.

めった打ち

村人は男をめった打ちにした
The villagers beat the man up [black and blue].／The villagers showered blows on the man.

めった斬［切］り

人をめった斬りにする
slash a person again and again

めった斬りの死体
a corpse covered with slash wounds
