The word“manga”covers everything from single-panel cartoons to comic strips to long cartoon stories to easy-to-understand explanations of economics in cartoon form. In Japan, the most common type is the narrative cartoon story, or the so-called“story manga.” The great majority of these stories are serialized in manga magazines and then republished in collected form in paperback books. Others are sold in book form from the beginning. These days, Japanese of all ages read manga and watch anime. Manga currently make up a major part of the Japanese publishing industry, representing more than 20% of total sales. Popular print cartoon stories are animated or even made into TV programs or live-action films featuring popular actors. Once animated or dramatized versions or film adaptations are deemed successful, characters in the manga are made into “character goods” and featured in advertisements.
