(a) study ((of))；research ((in, into, on))；〔調査〕(an) investigation ((into))，(an) inquiry ((about, into)) （▼studyはもっとも一般的，researchは主に特定の研究で，複数形でも使われるが，researchesの前に数詞が使われることはない．数えるときはan outstanding piece of researchなどという．investigationは入念な調査などに用いる）
