きゅう【級】

❶〔等級〕a grade; a class

級を上げる
「promote a person [move a person up] to a higher grade [rank]

級を下げる
demote a person to a lower grade

そろばんで一級上がった
I have been moved up to the next rank in the use of the abacus.

彼は第一級の弁護士だ
He is a first-rate lawyer.

その船は1,500トン級だ
The ship is in the 1,500 ton class.

彼は重量級のボクサーだ
He is a heavyweight boxer.

❷〔学年，組〕a class；〔学年〕 《米》 a grade；《英》 a form（▼classは学年と組両方の意味がある．米国のgradeは小学校から12年級（日本の高校３年）まで通算する）

He is one grade above [below] me.／He is one year 「ahead of [behind] me.
