たえる【絶える】

❶〔終わる，やむ〕cease, end, come to an end；〔とだえる〕be cut off

笛の音が絶えた
The sound of the flute 「broke off [ceased].

彼との連絡が絶えた
We have lost contact with him.

ついに息が絶えた
Finally he ceased to breathe.

油の供給が絶えた
The supply of oil has been cut off.

金脈が絶えた
The vein of gold ore petered out.

絶えざる努力をする
make constant efforts

ここは人通りが絶えない
There are always people coming and going here.

夫の女性問題で苦労が絶えなかった
She had no end of trouble because of her husband's affairs.

❷〔無くなる〕cease to exist；〔滅びる〕become extinct

私の家は私の代で血統が絶える
I am the last of my family.／My family line will die out with me.

この種は今世紀で絶えるだろう
This species will not survive into the next century.
