❶〔聞こえる〕hear ⇒きこえる（聞こえる）；〔耳を傾ける〕listen ((to))
聞こうとすれば聞こえる
If you listen, you can hear it.
今ラジオを聴いているところだ
I'm listening to the radio.
彼の聞いている所ではそんなことを言うな
Don't say things like that in his hearing.
彼は私の言うことなど聞こうとしない
He won't listen to me.／He turns a deaf ear to me.
人の言うことをよく聞いていないから分からないんだ
You don't understand because you weren't paying attention to me [what I said].
❷〔話として聞いて知る〕hear ((about, of))
聞くと見るとは大違いだ
There is a great difference between what I hear and what I see.
そのことは［彼のことは］聞いています
I have heard about it [him].
知らせを聞いて驚いた
I was surprised when I heard the news.
君が東京に来ていることは上田から聞いた

❸〔聞いて従う〕obey; listen to

❹〔願いをかなえる〕
今度はあなたの願いを聞きましょう
I will grant your request this time.

❺〔問う〕ask
その記事について一つ君に聞きたいことがある
I want to ask you a question about the article.
彼の消息を聞いたがだれも知らなかった
I asked [《文》 inquired] after him [I asked for news about him], but nobody knew anything.
それについてもっと詳しいことを聞きたい
「I would like [Give me] more information about it.
