つまる【詰まる】

❶〔一杯入っている〕be packed, be filled ((with))

予定が詰まっている
My schedule is tight [《口》 jam-packed].

ぎっしり詰まった本箱
a bookcase filled [stuffed] with books

道路は行楽客の車で詰まっている
The road is jammed [clogged] with the cars of people on pleasure trips.

❷〔ふさがる〕

下水が詰まっている
The sewer is stopped up.

鼻が詰まっている
I have a stopped-up [stuffy] nose.

窓がみんな閉まっていて息が詰まりそうだった
The windows were all closed and the air was stifling [suffocating].

女の子が病気の母親の世話をしているのを見て胸が詰まった
I was deeply moved when I saw the little girl taking care of her sick mother.

❸〔窮する〕

問い詰められて言葉に詰まった
Questioned closely, I was at a loss for words.

金に詰まって男は持ち家を売り払った
「Hard up [Pressed] for money, the man sold his house.

❹〔縮む，短くなる〕

ジーンズを洗ったら丈が詰まった
When I washed the jeans, they shrank.

先頭の２人のランナーの差が詰まってきた
The gap between the two front runners is narrowing.

❺〔野球で〕

詰まった当たりだった
He only got a piece of the ball (and it was caught).
