❶〔口をきかない〕be [fall] silent; say nothing

その点について彼は黙っていた
He 「said nothing [kept silent/held his tongue] on the point.

そのことは黙っていたほうがよい
You had better keep it to yourself.

Shut up!／Quiet!

黙ってせっせと働く
work steadily in silence

黙って出て行った
He went out without saying a word.／〔あいさつなしに〕He took French leave.

黙って言われた通りにしろ
Do as you are told without any questions.

❷〔了解を得ない〕

他人の物を黙って使うな
Don't use other people's things without (asking) permission.

また黙って欠席した
He was absent again without notice.

❸〔反論などをしない〕

こう侮辱されて黙ってはいられない
I cannot take such an insult lying down.

これほど多くの人が困っているのに黙ってはいられない
We cannot remain indifferent when so many people are suffering.

そんな不公平な扱いには黙っていられない
I cannot put up with such unfair treatment.／I cannot help protesting against their unfair treatment.
