Gambling is in principle illegal in Japan, although betting on four publicly operated types of races (horse, bicycle, motorboat, and auto races) has been legalized. For horse racing, about 75 percent of the total gross income is allocated to payouts, 15 percent goes to cover operational costs, and 10 percent is set aside for the state coffers. Another form of gambling popular in Japan is pachinko. Officials look the other way so long as prize money is not paid on the premises, though almost all the players know where to go to exchange their token “prizes” for cash.（意訳：日本では賭博は違法だが，公営ギャンブルとして競馬・競輪・競艇・オートレースは公認されている．競馬の場合，売上の75%が配当金に，15%が運営費に，10％が国庫に入ると言われる．また，半ば公認されているギャンブルにパチンコがある．これは景品の現金化が公然と行われている） ⇒とばく（賭博）
