1 ((個別的許可))…してよろしい…してよい，((形式))…しなさい（◆目上の者による許可・軽い命令を表す）．

“You may seat yourself in this chair,” the doctor said to his patient.
「このいすにかけてください」と医師が患者に言った

“You may go,” the king said to the guard.
「下がってよい」と王が衛兵に言った

質問をしてよろしいですか（◆話し言葉ではふつうcan）

1a ((一般的許可))((形式))（一般に）…してよい（掲示などで）…して差し支えない；〔may not〕…してはいけない，…することはできない．

Registered library users may borrow up to 10 books at a time.
図書館利用の登録者は１度に１０冊まで本を借りられる

Guests may use the room at any time for playing cards or as a lounge.

[語法]

(1) 許可を表す助動詞には通例 can を用い，may は改まった文体に限る傾向がある

May I take a day off next week?
来週１日休暇をいただけませんか．

(2) 許可を求める場合，May I ...? は Can I ...? より丁寧だが，相手に許可を与える場合は，You can のほうが You may よりやわらかく響く．You may は話し手の権威を感じさせる表現で，時には命令に近くなる．

(3) 推量の may not では may に，不許可を表す may not では not に強勢を置く．後者の場合，not は本動詞ではなく may 自体を否定する．may not より強く禁止を表すには must not を用いる．

(4) May I ...? に対して，許可しない場合の応答は No, I'm afraid you can't./I'm sorry, but＋理由．など．

(5) 他の助動詞に続くときや過去・完了・未来の表現では許可の may の代わりに be allowed [permitted] to などが用いられる

He won't be allowed to enter Japan.
彼は日本への入国を許されないだろう．

((推測))

2 ((個別的推測))…かもしれない（もしかしたら）…かもしれない，…の可能性がある；〔may have done〕（過去について）…していたかもしれない，（未来について）…してしまっているかもしれない．

We may not be here tomorrow.
明日はここには来ないかもしれません

Things may perhaps be different in the next century.
ひょっとしたら来世紀は状況が変わっているかもしれない

2d 〔pray，hopeなどに続く名詞節で〕…するように（と）（◆通例 will）；〔be afraid，fearなどに続く名詞節で〕…しないか（と）．

2e 〔wh-疑問文・wh節中で〕…でしょうか，かしら（◆疑問の調子を和らげる）．

[語法]

(1) 強い否定の推量には cannot, can't を用いる

It can't be true.
それは本当のはずがない．

(2) 推量の may は疑問文では用いない．代わりに Do you think ..., be likely to, can, could などを用いる

Do you think she's missed the bus?
彼女はバスに乗り遅れたと思うかい（◆否定疑問文・疑問文の従属節中ではmayを用いてよい）．

話し言葉では may ４０％＜might ６０％，書き言葉では may ７０％＞might ３０％．may は少し堅い表現でアカデミックな文体に多く用いる．might は意味的にやわらかく，特に話し言葉では may より多用される．

いずれにせよ，それはどうでもいいことで，（それは）ともかく（whether that is so or not）．
