まぬがれる【免れる】
❶〔逃れて助かる〕escape; be saved from ⇒のがれる（逃れる）
彼の家は焼失を免れた
His house escaped the fire.／The fire didn't reach his house.
地震で崩壊を免れた家は村に１軒もなかった
No house in the village withstood [survived] the earthquake.
幸いにも車は事故を免れた
Fortunately my car missed being involved in the accident.
危機一髪のところを免れた
He had a narrow escape.
❷〔避ける〕avoid; evade
彼は責任を免れようとした
He tried to evade [avoid taking/shirk] the responsibility.
彼らはなんらかの処罰は免れまい
They cannot escape [avoid/get off without] some form of punishment.
この提案は多少の反対は免れない
This proposal is sure to meet some opposition.／Some opposition to this proposal is inevitable.
