❶〔受け取る，得る〕receive; get
彼は大学から奨学金を受けている
He receives [gets] a scholarship from the university.
超勤手当の支払いを受けた
I got extra pay for overtime.
彼から注文を受けた
I received an order from him.
大統領はこの町の人々から熱烈な歓迎を受けた
The President was 「given an enthusiastic welcome [welcomed enthusiastically] by the people of the town.
日本では銃を所持するには許可を受けなければならない
In Japan you must get [obtain] permission to own a gun.
この事業は国からの補助を受けている
This enterprise 「is subsidized by [gets a subsidy from] the state.
その小説で直木賞を受けた
She was awarded the Naoki Prize for that novel.
彼の影響を大いに受けた
I was greatly influenced by him.
この世に生を受けて以来
ever since I was born／all my life
❷〔受け止める〕catch
彼は帽子でその球を受けた
He caught the ball in his cap.
塔の屋根は夕日を受けてあかあかと輝いた
The roof of the tower caught the rays of the setting sun and glistened brightly.

This promontory is hit directly by the strong northwesterly wind.

I 「received the bill [was asked to pay] for the repairs on the house.

❽〔応じる〕respond to; accept ⇒うけてたつ（受けて立つ）

He spoke after Mr. Ueda.
先代のあとを受けてのれんを守ってきた
Since I took over the management, I have tried to keep up the reputation of the store.
ハムレットのこのせりふは王妃の質問を受けて語られる
This line of Hamlet's is spoken following [in response to] the Queen's question.（▼followingは質問に続いて，in response toは答えて）
「それ」とは３行前の「ある異常な事件」を受けている
“It” refers to “the extraordinary incident” mentioned three lines above.
