おしい【惜しい】
❶〔失いがたい〕
命が惜しい
Life is dear [precious] to me.
惜しい人をなくしたものだ
His death is a great loss (to us).
惜しそうに
grudgingly
彼は惜しそうにペンを差し出した
He held out the pen reluctantly.
❷〔もったいない〕
くだらない会議に時間を使うのは惜しい
Time is too precious to spend in fruitless meetings.
秘書にしておくには惜しい男だ
It's a waste for him to remain a secretary.
いま捨ててしまっては惜しい
It is still too good to be thrown away.
君にあげるのなら惜しくない
I'd be happy to give it to you.
❸〔残念だ〕
この経験を生かせなかったのは惜しい
It is a pity that he should not have learned from this experience.
もう５分時間があればよかったのだが惜しかった
If only I had had five more minutes!
惜しいことに［惜しくも］彼に会いそこなった
