ひかえ【控え】

❶〔物や兵力の予備〕a reserve；〔予備の人員〕a man on the reserve list ⇒よび（予備）

我がチームには控えの選手が何人かいる
Our team has several reserve [backup/substitute] players.

控えの選手になりたくない
I don't want to be a benchwarmer.

❷〔順番待ち〕

控え力士がじっと土俵を見つめていた
The sumo wrestlers awaiting their bouts stared up intently at the ring from their seats 「just below [around the edge].

❸〔覚え書き〕a note; a memo ⇒おぼえがき（覚え書き）

手帳にこの前の会議の控えを取っておいた
I took notes of the last meeting in my pocket notebook.

他の局長へ控えを送る
send a memorandum to the other department heads

❹〔写し〕a (duplicate) copy, a duplicate；〔受取証などに付いた〕 《米》 a stub，《英》 a counterfoil
