❶〔理由〕a reason

彼は故なく家から追い出された
He was driven out of his home without cause [any reason].

彼は故あって叔父の養子になった
He was adopted by his uncle for 「a certain reason [some reason].（▼for a certain reasonは話し手に理由が分かっているとき，for some reasonは話し手に理由が分かっていないとき）

彼の沈黙は故なきことではない
There is some reason for his silence.／He has remained silent, and with reason.

❷〔由緒〕

故ある人
a person of good background

故ある家
a family with a history

❸〔…のために〕

それゆえに
for that reason

悪天候ゆえに旅行は延期された
「Because of [On account of] the bad weather, the trip was postponed.

何ゆえにうそをついたのか
Why did you lie?
