いう【言う】
❶〔言葉に出す〕say ((to; that))，speak, talk ((about)) （▼sayはある人の言った言葉を，またはその内容を伝える．speakは口をきく．talkはspeakとほぼ同じ意味だが，打ち解けた会話を意味することが多い）；〔語る〕tell ((to; that)) （▼「情報・物語・真実・うそなどを伝える」の意味．tellはsayと同様に直接・間接話法両方に使えるが，間接話法の場合はI told George [him] (that) I'd go.のように人の名前か代名詞を伴う）
「私は学生です」とトムは言った
“I'm a student,” 「Tom said [said Tom].（▼代名詞の時にsaid he [she] は古めかしい）
昨日東京に来たと彼は言った
He said [told me] (that) he had come to Tokyo the day before.
もう一度言ってくださいませんか
Would you mind 「saying that again [repeating that]?／I beg your pardon?（▼軽く上がり調子で言う）
私は決定的な一言を言わずにおいた
I left the final word unsaid.
言うは易(やす)く行うは難し
((諺)) Easier said than done.
彼女は言いたいことを言った
She had her say.／She spoke her mind.
小声で言ったから聞きとれなかった
As he spoke in a low voice, I could not catch his words.
あの子はまだものが言えない
The child cannot talk yet.
馬鹿げたことを言うな
Don't talk nonsense.
昨日言っていたのはこの本です
This is the book (that) I was talking about yesterday.
私が言ったと言わないでくれ
Don't tell anybody I said so.／Don't quote me.
あの人はうそ［真実］を言った
He told 「a lie [the truth].
その光景に驚いて一言も言えなかった
She was dumbfounded [struck dumb] with astonishment at the sight.
息子さんが病気だと言ってやってくれ
「Send him word [Tell him] that his son is ill.（▼send him wordは使いをやって，あるいは手紙などで知らせる）
あの人の言うとおりを信じることにしよう
Let's take him at his word.
君の言うことは分からない
I don't understand you [what you mean].
❷〔音をたてる〕
その窓はがたがたいう
The window rattles.
この靴はきゅうきゅういう
These shoes creak.
ばたんといって扉が閉まった
The door slammed shut.
❸〔尋ねる〕ask
何の用かと彼は言った
He asked (me) what I wanted.
❹〔命令する〕tell, order ((a person to do))；〔依頼する〕ask ((a person to do))
彼は明日ここに来るようにと私に言った
He told me to come here tomorrow.
彼は我々にすぐ立ち退くようにと言った
He ordered us to leave at once.
彼はこの手紙をコピーしてほしいと言った
He asked me to photocopy this letter.
言うことをきかない子
a disobedient child／an unmanageable child
❺〔考えなどを述べる〕remark, state ((that)) （▼stateは改まって述べること）
「彼は仕事が思わしくないようです」と彼女は言った
“His work doesn't seem to be going well,” she remarked.
首相は近い将来に減税はないと言った
The Prime Minister stated that there would be no tax cut in the near future.
私に言わせれば，彼は天才だ
In my opinion, he is a genius.
妻はジョーンズ夫妻を夕食に招いたらどうかと言った
My wife suggested that we (might) invite Mr. and Mrs. Jones to dinner.
そう言われてみると，彼の行動は最初からおかしかった
Now that you mention it, his behavior was suspicious from the beginning.
❻〔批評する〕make a comment ((on))；〔助言する〕advise
彼はそれについてなにも言わなかった
He made no comment on it.／He said nothing about it.
たいへん結構です．なにも言うことはありません
That's perfect. It leaves nothing to be desired.
かかりつけの医者は専門医にみてもらったほうがいいと言った
Our family doctor advised me to see a specialist.
私の言うことをお聞きなさい
Listen to me.／Take my advice.
あの人にはいくら言っても無駄です
It is no use 「telling him anything [giving him any advice].
それ見ろ．言わんこっちゃない
There! 「What did I tell you? [I told you so!]
❼〔表現する〕express
思うことが英語でうまく言えない
I can't express myself well in English.
これは傑作と言ってもよい
「It can safely be said [It is not too much to say] that this is a masterpiece.
控え目に言っても，彼女は好奇心が強すぎる
She is overly curious, to put it mildly.
彼は残酷と言わないまでも冷淡だ
He is cold-hearted, if not cruel.
言ってみれば，父親も同然だ
He is, so to speak, just like a father to me.
❽〔呼ぶ，称する〕
これを英語で何と言いますか
What do you call this in English?
英語で「辞書」をdictionaryと言う
The English for jisho is “dictionary.”
❾〔うわさする〕
彼はその賞の候補にあがっていると言われる
It is said that he has been nominated for the prize.

❿〔口添えする〕say a word in recommendation ((of a person))
