[前]（◆tillと意味の違いはなく交換可能；文頭や長い節の始め，改まった書き言葉などではuntilのほうが好まれる；継続の意を強めてup untilとすることもある）

1 〈時間〉…まで（ずっと），…まで（繰り返し）．

work [last] from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

2 〔否定文で〕…までは（…しない）（before），…になってやっと［ようやく，初めて］．

Nothing happened until noon.
正午までは何ごとも起こらなかった

We had no rain until the middle of August.
８月半ばになってやっと雨が降った

Not until the 15th century was movable metal type invented.＝It was not until the 15th century that movable metal type was invented.
((形式))１５世紀になって初めて金属の活字が発明された

[語法]

(1) 否定文に until を用いると文意があいまいになることがある．I didn't sleep until six. は次の２通りの解釈が可能．

(a) （否定の範囲を sleep までと解して）６時まで眠らなかった［起きていた］．

(b) （否定の範囲を six までと解して）６時まで眠っていたのではない，６時前に目を覚ました．

(2) 肯定文では until の次の語が時点を表す語でなく，日・月・年など幅がある時を表す語の場合，「…まで」の中にその日・月・年が含まれるかどうかは文脈や社会常識から判断のつくことも多いが，This ticket is valid until May 7. では切符が「５月７日まで有効」か「５月６日まで」かはあいまい．

3 〈場所〉まで（◆この用法は「…に着くまで」を含意する場合に限られる）．

Stay on the train until Mito, and then change.
このまま水戸まで乗って行き，それから乗り換えなさい

4 ((スコット・北イング))…へ，…に（to）．

[語法]

(1) until 節内の「主語＋be 動詞」を省略することがある．この構文はレシピや器具の使用説明書に多い

Whip the cream until (it is) stiff.
クリームを角が立つまで泡立てなさい

The shoppers crowded at the entrance until (they were) allowed in.
買い物客は入ってよいと言われるまで入り口に群がっていた．

(2) until 節内の完了形は動作の完了を明示・強調するが，単純形と意味に違いのないことも多い

Let's wait until the rain stops [has stopped].
雨がやむまで待とう

I waited until the rain (had) stopped.
雨がやむまで待った．

2 〔否定文で〕…するまで（…しない），…して初めて（…する）．

You mustn't sign the contract until you hear from me.
私から連絡のあるまで契約書に署名してはいけない

It was not until I left college that I realized the importance of study.
((形式))大学を出て初めて勉強の大切さがよくわかった

3 （…して）ついに，とうとう（and）（◆この用法では till より until が好まれる；通例 until の前にコンマを置く；until at last とすることも多い）．

He ran on and on, until (at last) he was completely tired out.
彼はどんどん走り続け，ついにへとへとになった

unless and until＝until and unless

…しない限り；…するまでは（◆通例２語のうちいずれか一方で十分とされる）．
