イギリス国教会の司祭，新約聖書学者。オックスフォード大学に学び，オックスフォードのリンカーン・カレッジ (1919～21) ，ニュー・カレッジ (21～50) のフェロー (特別研究員) ，聖書釈義学教授 (34～49) 。『神学研究雑誌』 Journal of Theological Studiesの編集者 (41～53) 。様式史的研究方法を導入して，イギリス神学界に大きな影響を与えた。主著"History and Interpretation in the Gospel" (35) ，"Locality and Doctrine in the Gospels" (38) ，"The Gospel Message of St. Mark" (50) ，"St. John's Gospel" (56) 。
