1 〔肯定文で〕すでに，もう，今までに，それまでに；〔強意〕もうすっかり，十分に（◆(1) この意では否定文・疑問文の場合通例 yet を用いる．(2) be 動詞，know，have と共に用いる場合を除き，通例完了形）．

[語法]
(1) yes/no の答えを求める疑問文では，1の意味の already は yet に変わる．what や who など wh- で始まる語が文頭にくる場合は yet は用いない．
(2) 通例 already は be 動詞や助動詞のあとに置くが，以下のような省略文では前に置き，be 動詞・助動詞に強勢が置かれる
“Have you met him yet?” “Yes, I already have.”
「彼にもう会った？」「ああ」．
