1 〈人・物が〉…のように見える，思われる，（…であると）思われる≪to be≫．

You seem fine today.
今日は元気そうだね

John seems (to be) sick.
ジョンは病気のようだ（◆It seems that John is sick. だと伝聞など；⇒2）

1a 〈人などが〉（…であるように）見せかける，（…であるような）ふりをする．

He seemed intelligent at first, but his stupidity soon became evident.
彼は最初こそ利口らしく見せかけていたが，すぐその愚かさが明らかになった

2 〈状況・事態などが〉…のように考え［感じ］られる，思われる，（…のように）思われる≪like≫，（人にとって）…のように思われる≪to≫；〈人などが〉（…するように）思われる≪to do≫；〔it seems (to A) (that) ...〕（Ａ（人）にとって）…のように思われる；〔it seems (to A) as if [though] ...〕（Ａ（人）にとって）まるで…のように思われる．

◆look は目で見て「…のようだ」の意で，後続の形容詞も見た感じの良し悪しや違いをいうものが多い．seem の後は推測して「…のようだ」と判断を示す形容詞が多い．
