リンカーンの「ゲティスバーグの演説」

ペンシルヴェニア州ゲティスバーグにおける国有墓地(ナショナル・セメトリ)の献納(デディケイション)に際して
八十七年前、われわれの父祖たちは、自由の精神にはぐくまれ、すべての人は平等につくられているという信条に献げられた、新しい国家を、この大陸に打ち建てました。
現在(いま)われわれは一大国内戦争のさなかにあり、これによりこの国家が、あるいはまた、このような精神にはぐくまれ、このように献げられたあらゆる国家が、永続できるか否(いな)かの試練を受けているわけであります。われわれはこの戦争の一大激戦の地で相い会しています。われわれはこの国家が永らえるようにと、ここでその生命を投げ出した人々の、最後の安息の場所として、この戦場の一部を献げるために来たのであります。われわれがこのことをするのはまことに適切であり適当であります。
しかし、更に大きな意味において、われわれは、この土地を献げる(デディケート)ことはできません――聖め献げる(コンセクレイト)ことができません――聖別(ハロウ)することができません。生き残っている者と戦死した者とを問わず、ここで戦った勇敢な人々こそ、この場所を聖(きよ)め献げたのでありまして、われわれの微力をもってしては、それに寸毫(すんごう)の増減も企(くわだ)てがたいのであります。われわれがここで述べることは、世界はさして注意を払わないでありましょう、また永く記憶することもないでしょう。しかし彼らがここでなしたことは、決して忘れられることはないのであります。ここで戦った人々が、これまでかくも立派(ノーブリー)にすすめて来た未完の事業に、ここで身を捧(ささ)げるべきは、むしろ生きているわれわれ自身であります。われわれの前に残されている大事業に、ここで身を捧げるべきは、むしろわれわれ自身であります――それは、これらの名誉の戦死者が最後の全力を尽(つく)して身命を捧げた、偉大な主義(コーズ)に対して、彼らの後をうけ継いで、われわれが一層の献身を決意するため、これら戦死者の死をむだに終らしめないように、われらがここで堅く決心をするため、またこの国家をして、神のもとに、新しく自由の誕生をなさしめるため、そして人民の、人民による、人民のための、政治を地上から絶滅させないため、であります。

Gettysburg Address
Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate―we cannot consecrate―we cannot hallow―this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us―that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion；that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain；that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom；and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
